The Client: School-Day

The Need
School-Day hired Randy Horton to manage the implementation of their flag-ship product: School-Day.com, an online management system for parents, teachers and children.  Mr. Horton designed School-Day’s brand identity, advised on the user experience and information design for the Web site and managed the entire project’s design, development and implementation which consisted of a budget well over $3 million.

The Solution
A user-centric approach to portal design was the foundation of the management practice.  Using SCRUM and other agile management methodologies like Kan Ban and Rational Rose, Mr. Horton lead the implementation of the flag ship product and recommended creating focus groups, and targeting dedicated users of the software in order to accommodate testing and development of the core product.

“Why not open the software to be used by community centers, social networks and like-minded organizations?  Lets get a test-bed of users and ensure we develop for specific needs instead of guessing.”

The Results
Mr. Horton secured the first test-bed of users.  He leveraged his long-term contacts with the Cabbagetown Community Centre, who had a significant need for the product and created ‘My Community’, an alpha release of the software.  The benefits of this initiative included…

– Ability to debug the software with real users
– Provide motivated initiatives that inform customer support, and feature enhancement processes
– Integrity and ecommerce testing
– Acceptance testing of existing features and methodologies

Without Mr. Horton’s involvement at this critical stage of the project, School-Day and My Community would not have been able to secure its current, leading position in the online education management marketplace.
